Orientation
to Educational Opportunities
Orientation to Educational Opportunities introduces the many educational
experiences available free of charge to school groups from kindergarten
through high school touring the Aquarium. Learn how to interpret
the galleries for your students and discover the many programs
available for students and teachers. All Aquarium offerings are
cross-referenced to applicable science guidelines in Alabama,
Georgia and Tennessee as well as national science standards. A
minimum of 5 participants is required for the orientation program,
which can be up to two hours in length (plus the optional IMAX
film).

Science
with a Splash/ Habitat Studies
Explore a variety of aquatic habitats OUTDOORS -- pond, stream
and marsh or other habitats that relate specifically to the Aquarium's
vision of “inspiring wonder and appreciation for the natural
world." A minimum of 10 participants is required for the
class, which can be a half or full day in length. Special emphasis
is placed on developing the skills required for conducting chemical
and biological tests of aquatic ecosystems and assessing biodiversity
in a variety of habitats. Yes, we collect critters (in a safe
manner) and all equipment is provided. Classes ideally would be
conducted at field locations that schools would be able to use
on a continuing basis. Sufficient lead time is necessary so we
can prepare the lesson and adapt it to the site you pick for the
class.
Environmental
Education across the Curriculum
Experience learning in a whole new way while obtaining graduate
credit. Environmental Education Across the Curriculum (EDU 530)
is offered as a graduate-level course through Alabama A&M
University for elementary, middle and junior high teachers. The
class provides teachers with hands-on, inquiry-based activities
while investigating a variety of habitats and honing outdoor
teaching skills/techniques. No more than 30 teachers can register
for the class. The class lasts seven days and includes a residential
component stressing cooperative learning. An individual project
is due two weeks after the class session.

Schoolyard
Ecosystems and Middle School Science
Getting students out of the indoor classroom and into the outdoor
classroom can be challenging. In this class we explore ways to
use inquiry-based and hands-on learning right in your own schoolyard.
Sampling, classifying and experimenting are only some of the skills
acquired while investigating your schoolyard ecosystem. The class
can be a half or full day in length and will be held at your school.
A minimum of 10 teachers is required. An added bonus is your very
own copy of Schoolyard Ecosystems and Middle School Science,
courtesy of the Toyota USA Foundation, the project's sponsor.
